Pre-marriage Counseling (PEC) Introduction

Pre-marriage counseling is a mandatory step before the “Marriage Preparation Course” in Arch-diocese of Bangalore. Please register on the available timeslots to start preparing yourself to a healthy and fruitful married life.

What is PEC?

PEC is a Catholic Programme designed to help couples to enter into marriage, armed with an unending commitment to each other, to grow in a relationship through loving communication, building trust and to have ‘Christ’ as the center of their family.

Background (Why?)

Firstly, arranged marriages are common in India. These marriages often leave no room for interaction among couples engaging to get married. In addition to this, most marriages are planned in haste. In such marriages, there is a lack of knowledge about each other and minimal effort to do a proper family background check.

Secondly, Marriages in modern times are found to be losing their sanctity and divine purpose. It is looked like a ‘magical step’ which would change troubled and addicts as soon as they tie the knot. There is a need to understand the real meaning of marriage when one is contemplating the marriage at the initial stage itself.

Thirdly, Two persons get into marriage with their own set of values, beliefs, behaviours and needs. There is a need to understand or become aware of one’s personality to lead a healthy marriage life. Often, the inadequate knowledge of oneself and the inability to get adapted to the calling of marriage are creating compatibility as well as adaptability issues.

Aim

To generate greater awareness and understanding about oneself, the other and marriage from a psycho-spiritual perspective which is integral to proximate preparation.

Objectives

• Greater self-awareness,
• Insight into one’s behaviours and attitudes influenced by the Family of Origin,
• Discovering oneself, and learn effective personal and interpersonal coping strategies,
• Experience genuine dialogues and expressions of expectations and needs,
• Deconstruct myths and reconstruct Christian perspectives about marriage &
• Entering into marriage with greater knowledge, confidence and openness.

Please note: At the end of the programme, the participants would meet the counsellors, both individually, and with their would-be partner, for a therapeutic encounter.
